🇧🇷Minha terceira obsessão infanto-juvenil, depois do Snoopy e da Disney, foi a Holanda. Recortava de revistas as fotos de moinhos e tamancos. Guardava tudo numa caixa de madeira junto com embalagens de chocolate Droste, latinhas de cigarrilhas do freeshop e um cartão-postal que meus pais enviaram de lua-de-mel para minha avó do hotel Krasnapolski, em Amsterdã. Na frente deste hotel tem um monumento com terra de várias províncias dos Países Baixos e numa delas tinha terra do Suriname. Como assim?

O Suriname, ali em cima do Amazonas, foi colônia holandesa até 1975. Ontem! Quando o tal monumento em Amsterdã foi construído, ainda fazia parte integral do reino, junto com a Indonésia e a Frísia. Fiquei perplexo. Desde então, esse país diferente entrou e saiu do meu radar inúmeras vezes. Tinha vontade de conhecer, mas muita preguiça de ir até lá. Queria juntar numa mesma viagem as três Guianas, a francesa, a holandesa e a inglesa, mas não é muito simples. Até que um dia os planetas se alinharam. Uma brecha se abriu num triângulo entre Belém do Pará, a Ilha de Marajó e o Suriname. E lá fui eu!

No pré-viagem percebi que não teria muito para ver ou fazer, mas queria mesmo era estar por lá. Entrar, carimbar o passaporte, tirar uma foto com a bandeira, passear pela capital, mandar postais. De repente marcar um encontro local via aplicativo e coisas afins. E foi mais ou menos isso o que aconteceu nos três dias que passei por lá. O encontro acabou sendo com um holandês.

O Suriname tem cerca de 600 mil habitantes de etnias muito variadas como congoleses e indianos, javaneses e flamengos, chineses e cingaleses. Há ruínas de uma cidade judaica no meio da floresta, junto a quilombos dos maroons e tabas de populações indígenas. Uma mistura à brasileira, mas com ingredientes diferentes. As atrações de Paramaribo são a mesquita, a sinagoga, o castelo-prisão, o templo hinduísta e a enorme catedral cor de rosa, considerada o maior edifício de madeira das Américas.

A língua oficial é o holandês, mas fala-se o tak-tak, um papiamento de vários idiomas. O centro administrativo, com a casa do presidente, a assembleia nacional e os ministérios, lembra a Main Street USA da Disney com um toque de pintura do Vermeer, mas que com o tempo foi apodrecendo. Quase todas as construções são de tapume. Sem fugir do script tropical latino-americano, o Suriname teve um ditador, repressão, corrupção (ainda tem), racismo (ainda tem) e pobreza (ainda tem).

O Suriname é testemunha de que qualquer colonização é uma condenação à miséria de boa parte da população. Os civilizados holandeses escravizaram, exploraram, se beneficiaram e depois largaram o que sobrou com o prêmio de consolação da Independência. Hoje em dia fazem o papel de caga-regras global. Defensores dos direitos dos povos. Mas esquecem como fizeram de Haia, Amsterdam, Delft, Groningem, Gouda, Maastricht as cidades mais bonitinhas da Europa.

Me acompanharam na visita Anton de Kom e Astrid Roemer. Quem melhor para mostrar um país do que seus escritores? De Kom pregou o fim das leis raciais, foi exilado e morreu em um campo de concentração nazista. Astrid Roemer fez a proeza de contar aos holandeses parte da História jogada por debaixo dos tapetes. Ambos me incentivaram a passar uma noite numa plantage ou engenho local. Escolhi o Peperpot, a 30 minutos de Paramaribo, na Reserva Natural de mesmo nome, em frente ao caudaloso Rio Suriname. Pena que na frente do bucólico lugar com estrada de terra e fábrica de chocolates orgânicos tem uma refinaria de petróleo, que, junto às minas de bauxita, promete trazer um pouco de desenvolvimento para este país quase esquecido na bacia amazônica. Valeu conhecer, mas não preciso voltar.

Mais uma igreja por aí | Another neighborhood, another church

🇬🇧 One of my early childhood obsessions, after Snoopy and Disney, was Holland. I used to cut pictures of windmills and clogs out of magazines and keep everything in a wooden box along with packages of Droste chocolate, tins of cigarillos from the duty-free shop and a postcard that my parents sent to my grandmother on their honeymoon, from Krasnapolski Hotel, in Amsterdam. In front of this hotel there is a monument with earth from several provinces in the Netherlands and one of them had mud from Suriname. Really?

Suriname, up there in the Amazon, was a Dutch colony until 1975. Yesterday! When that monument in Amsterdam was built, it was still an integral part of the kingdom, along with Indonesia and Friesland. I was baffled. Since then, this strange country has come and gone from my radar countless times. I wanted to visit, but I was too lazy to go there. I wanted to combine the three Guianas, the French, the Dutch and the English in the same trip, but it is not very simple. Until one day the planets aligned. A breach opened in a triangle between Belém do Pará, the Island of Marajó and Suriname. And off I went!

Even before boarding I realized that I wouldn't have much to see or do. But I really wanted to be there. Get in, stamp my passport, take a picture with the flag, walk around the capital, send postcards. Maybe arrange an app meeting with a local. And that's more or less what happened in the three days I spent there. The app date turned out to be with a Dutch guy.

Suriname has about 600,000 inhabitants of very varied ethnic groups such as Congolese and Indians, Javanese and Flemish, Chinese and Sinhalese. There are ruins of a Jewish city in the middle of the jungle, next to maroon quilombos and indigenous tabas. A kind of Brazilian mix, but with different ingredients. The attractions of Paramaribo are the mosque, the synagogue, the prison castle, the Hindu temple and the huge pink cathedral, considered the largest wooden building in the Americas.

The official language is Dutch, but people speak tak-tak, a Papiamento of several languages. The administrative center, with the president's house, the national assembly and the ministries, looks like Disney's Main Street USA with a touch of Vermeer painting rotten away over time. Many of the wooden buildings are falling apart. Without escaping the Latin American tropical script, Suriname had a dictator, repression, corruption (still has), racism (still has) and poverty (still has).

Suriname is another witness that any colonization is a condemnation for a good part of the population. The civilized Dutch enslaved, exploited, profited and then left what remained with the consolation prize of Independence. Nowadays they play the role of global conscience. Defenders of peoples' rights. But they forget how they made The Hague, Amsterdam, Delft, Groningen, Gouda, Maastricht the most beautiful cities in Europe.

Anton de Kom and Astrid Roemer accompanied me on my visit. Who better to showcase a country than its writers? De Kom preached the end of racial laws, was exiled and died in a Nazi concentration camp. Astrid Roemer did the feat of telling the Dutch part of the history that was left under the carpet. Both encouraged me to spend a night at a local plantage or sugar mill. I chose Peperpot, 30 minutes from Paramaribo, in the Natural Reserve of the same name, in front of the mighty Suriname River. Too bad that in front of the bucolic place at the end of a dirt road and near the organic chocolate factory there is an oil refinery, which, together with the bauxite mines, promises to bring a little development to this almost forgotten country in the Amazon basin. It was worth visiting, but I don't need to visit once again.
